Mr. Claud Smith

Mr. Claud Smith, age 93, of Toccoa passed away Sunday February 3rd 2019 at his home.

Born October 26th, 1925 in Canon, Ga, he was the son of the late James Robert and Maude Weaver Smith. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Phil and Gaston Smith and one sister, Lucille Smith Stovall.

Family members include his wife, Ruth Cochran Smith of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Jo-Anne Smith of Ashland, Or. and Gregg and Melanie Smith of Gainesville, Ga; granddaughters, Abigail Smith of Gainesville and Grace Smith of Ashland.

Claud joined the United States Navy on his 18th birthday and served in WWII in both the European and Asiatic-Pacific Theatres until his honorable discharge in 1946. Following his military service, he returned to Toccoa and was employed for many years with NAPA Auto Parts, formerly Slack Auto Parts, as store manager.

Claud was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Toccoa, where he served as a deacon and enthusiastic participant in the Agoga Bible class. He was also a member of the Toccoa Lions Club and the V.F.W. He loved the city of Toccoa and served for eight years as a City Commissioner and also served as Mayor of Toccoa in 1997.

Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Friday February 8, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Toccoa with the Rev. Tommy Childress officiating. Entombment will follow at Stephens Memorial Mausoleum. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Navy and V.F.W Post 4346.

County Commissioners and members of the Agoga Bible class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 6pm – 8pm Thursday, February 7, 2019 and from 12 noon until 1:30pm Friday, February 8, 2019.

Flowers are optional and those desiring may make donations in Claud's name to the V.F.W. Post 4346.
